The real first step in this particular (ad)venture was to purchase a boat.

I have always liked the looks of Bertrams. They also have a very good reputation as to sea handling capabilities and, depending on the year, a good builing reputation. However, one of my favorites, the classic Bertram 31 is too small for my needs. Then I happened to to be at a US Department of Treasure auction (Pompano, FL) where this baby was being auctioned.

She had been seized due to running contraband (drugs). Personally I consider drug runners/dealers worse then murderers but that's a whole other subject. So, without further ado, this is as she was listed:

Yes, another bidder, a used yachts dealer, was interested in her too but since he wished to leave himself a significant margin I was able to both outbid him and get her for roughly 60% of what the surveyor later assessed as a "fair market value".

As you can imagine, I was a happy camper. More pictures will follow soon.

  1. Found this blog on BoatDiesel.com. I started my own adventure with a 1993 42' Jersey Dawn II Sportfish about a year and a half ago. I have 2 DD 6-71 TIB 485HP engines. These late '80's era sportfish models are great boats, well built, easy ride, and the systems are basic and easy to learn, the interiors spacious and comfortable once updated to some modern specs. Only downside is fuel burn, but if you can keep to hull speed on long trips it's not hideous. Besides, oil isn't doing anyone any good in the ground, and once it's pumped up, why let the Chinese burn it all? ;-)

I would expect that you can count on a couple of cylinders having corroded walls after sitting that long unless the exhaust outlets were sealed off when it was stored. The pistons that were in the fully down position would have open galleys to the the outside air. The exhaust manifolds could also be corroded. The good news is that DD engines can actually run in this condition, and one of mine actually ran rather well. Little smoky at start-up and hard to start when cold (low compression in those holes), but actually ran OK. We got ours from FL to RI on that engine. I am not familiar with the 92 series engines, but all Detroits are known for their long service and durability if not pushed or overheated. Get your cooling systems flushed out and spiffed by someone who knows what they are doing. Replace the raw water impellers and be sure you have full water and coolant flow before moving on to the rest of the issues (and there will be some, drug runners are not known for preventative maintenance )

I know my wife has taken to this boat in a way I never expected. We are nearing retirement age and she is talking about living aboard at least 6 mo/year. If you were to buy a boat like this today it would cost $1M or more.

    1. According to the surveyor, the replacement value is 1,400,000 :-)

BUT, that would be for a newer boat with more modern (read as efficient) engines.

I'm happy with this one for now.
